Wednesday 3rd December – walk *** - Horsey Wind pump – sunny.
A good night in the little VW parked in West Somerton at the end of the
Staithe not cold despite waking a frost. I took the camera out to try for
some sunrise pics and watched a fisherman launch his boat and head out to
the broads. I then spoke to a dog walker who was going herring drifting
later who said he thought that there were too many seals about now, might
be right as there are over 3000 on this section of beach at Horsey and
apparently 3000 pups have been born up at Blakeney! With wall to wall
sunshine on a perfect winter’s days we enjoyed our porridge before
returning to the National Trust’s Horsey Windpump to do a 3-mile circular
walk taking in the Mere and Horsey village. While Mag got a carpark ticket,
free with our NT membership card I went in search for the small disc I had
lost off my camera yesterday, sadly I didn’t find it, that’s another
£30 off Ebay! When I returned to the van Mag was talking to some people in
a red car which turned out to be our friends, Neil and Linda Hurrell who
had come up to see the seals:) After a nice catch up we went our separate
ways as we headed over to the very picturesque windmill, sadly not open as
the views from the top would have been stunning but it is still a
photographers dream set as it is at the end of the Staithe:) We continue to
the viewpoint overlooking the impressive Horsey Mere which is a deadend so
we return to start the circular walk, then sadly we have some bad news, a
notice at the start says the path is closed due to work on the dyke:( We
decide to carry on to the actual closure with the reed fringed mere to the
left and grazing fields of sheep to the right with the path being very
muddy! We get to the closure after a mile and a half and have to backtrack,
a shame really as we miss the best part of the walk, the dyke leading to
Brograve Mill and Horsey village, still never mind perhaps we can do it on
another visit to the seals. Back at the van we enjoy some home-made soup
before heading for home a little earlier than expected having a quick look
at Potter Heigham. So a nice couple of days away in the lovely Norfolk:)
